Yes I know it's been quite a while since I posted anything on the site. however we have been to Vietnam (my first visit) - Saigon and Hoi An with a lenghty day trip to Hue. Since we got back it's been a bit hectic catching up, to say nothing of culling through the 750 or so photos I shot with the X-2 and XE-1 while we were away.
I am now finding time to post a brief update on what's been happening in my world and to say that I'll be updating the website over the next week or two. I've also prepared another book of B&W images, this time of the Reunification Palace in Saigon which is now available on Blurb.

Got back from my travels to Thailand (Cha-Am) and Laos (Luang Prabang) yesterday (Sunday). I took the X2 of course and also the XE-1 with the 35/1.4 and 18-55/2.8-4.0. I also took the XE-1's M adapter with the old 50/1.5 Summarit. I only used this latter lens on one occasion.
Now I have around 700 photos to go through and process! This will take quite a time as you might guess.
So images will appear gradually as I work through them.
Made my mind up!

I have gone and done it!
I tried the XE-1 out on the Fuji stand at Photokina, and was quite impressed. Then at RDC we got in a Fuji X-Pro-1 with two lenses, so I borrowed camera and one lens for the weekend and was impressed. A local Fuji dealer had the XE-1 in stock and a trial with the adapter and 35 Summicron together with Fuji's 35/1.4 convinced me that this was just the thing. So ...... I've bought an XE-1, a spare battery and the M-mount adapter, and I shall get a couple of Fuji lenses to complement the Leica ones.

Right now, I'm in a considerable quandry!
I love my X2 - it has brilliant image quality with a focal length that is just right. But very occasionally a wider or longer focal length is needed. Oh, and for travel does one really want to be carting around huge heavy lumps of gear, even if they're Leica M with several lenses?
Some would say of course you do!
At my age I would say of course not, given the improvements in IQ over the last few years.
So what do I do?
Well to start with there's the D-Lux 6 due next month - this is very promising with its f1.4 lens, improved screen and EVF - so that's one possibility.
Then there's the Fuji XE-1 - same sensor size as the X2 - takes Leica lenses with an adapter so I would not have to throw away (some of) my lenses; and I could get a zoom. Well, I don't actually mean throw away of course, but sell them on.
Also there's the Olympus E-PL5, takes the same EVF as the X2, but it is m4/3, so all the M lenses will be twice their effective focal length - hmmm - needs thought.
Then of course I could always keep the "good user" M8.2 I have on generous loan from RDC, but that brings us full circle to the size/weight problem!
Add to that the fact that I would also love an a la carte X2, despite the rumours I hear about it and one has a right old mix-up!
Hey-ho, and watch this space once again.
The One Challenge has been and gone

Copenhagen proved to be a real magnet for Forum members. There were 42 for dinner on the Saturday evening and the restaurant (The Brewpub)coped very well and provided us all with a very fine meal.
It's a shame that Friday's sunny (albeit chilly) day did not carry over to the Saturday and Sunday, but we can't have everything. The actual challenge started with flat grey light but a tiny bit of sun appeared from time to time. Good shadows were however lacking.
It will be interesting to see what entrants make of it.
I have started to review the shots I took and find that there are several that could be used, but I have a feeling that one in particular stands out.
I eventually decided to take simply the X2, but I did also bring the wide-angle auxiliary lens that I have for it. I wanted this for my visit to Roskilde Cathedral about 25 minutes by train from Copenhagen. It proved useful.
I shall shortly be posting some of the photos I took at the Cathedral in the World Heritage Site area of the website.
Posting my selection of my potential Challenge photos will have to wait until after the results are out in later November.
One Challenge - Copenhagen
04th October 2012 - 0 comments
No sooner has Photokina's dust begun to settle, than I am off the copenhagen to take part in the 2012 One Challenge. Last year's 3rd place in the day and 1st in the night need to be defended, after all!
So I am off on Thursday 11th and come back early on Monday 15th. I won't bore you with the BA changed flights saga, but instead of convenient LCY - CPH - LCY it's LHR - CPH - LHR. Grrr!
Friday will be a busy day. I am scheduling Roskilde in the morning for the World Heritage Cathedral, only about 20 minutes away by train. Then later some architectural shooting - there's a lot of it about in CPH! Then it's Kukturnatte - an Arts Festival for the evening, probably with some other forum members.
Saturday is THE day - lunch at Nyhavn, then the Challenge (see the Portfolios for images from earlier ones) then a forum dinner in the evening followed by the night challenge. Phew!
If I have time I'll blog a bit during the weekend.
Photokina 2012 - Part II

Sorry for taking so long to get round to giving a short resume of the remainder of Photokina.
Having spent most of Tuesday in the Leica area, I only had time to quickly visit a couple of stands of interest on the rest of that dya - Artisan & Artist and JJC.
I wanted to see a particular person at both so I had to return on Wednesday to speak with them about their products of interest.
The rest of Wednesday I spent looking at items that were of more personal interest - Voigtlander and Zeiss lenses, Olympus, Panasonic and Fuji cameras and lenses.
I also had look at the Hasselblad Lunar. Now there seems to be a great big collective "raspberry" being blown in that direction, exactly why I am not sure. Possibly because it is a radical departure for Hasselblad following their tie-up with Sony, and because it is based on the Nex concept, but at a very high - almost Leica-like price. Personally I thought it was a great looking camera. Needed some more work before release, though (not enough finger space 'twixt grip and lens in some cases), and some of the finishes seemed to me to be a bit, dare I say it, bling! But still an interesting idea.
I was impressed by the Fuji XE-1 though - very impressed. Also the top of the Pen range the Olympus E-PL5. It was a shame that the rumoured Panasonic GX2 was not there, and only very few GH3s - that area was mobbed.
It was as well I left promptly, returned to the Hotel and collected my bag. When I arrived at the airport the signs were saying that my flight to STN was very delayed by 1.5 hours to 9pm. So I went to the ticket desk to confirm this and was told I could go to LHR instead on the 6pm flight - result!! Got home early!
