Photokina time has come round once again. Two years ago it was the M9 Titanium that was the talking point, this year it's - well we're not quite certain what rabbit Leica will pull out of Solms's warren. I will be at "Das Wesentliche" on Monday 17th to find out.

Rumour has it strongly that we'll get a new M - let's call it the MX or M10 and quite what that will turn out to be will be a discussion point on the Forums for a long time. One thing seems to be almost certain if the rumours are true - the purists will be up in arms! I hear "Death of Leica"; "It'll never sell" echoing around.

But you know what - it will sell and it will probably bring more people into the brand. This is needed if Leica are to achienve their aim of much increased market share, to say nothing of all the new models of amazing quality being now marketed by competitors.

Other things to be announced in Monday night's party will most likely include two re-branded Panasonics - D-Lux and V-Lux, possibly a date for the long-awaited CS lenses for the S range and an S3. But will there be "One More Thing" to paraphrase the late Steve Jobs?

I really hope so, because Leica really really lack a model between the X2 and the M range - a yawning gap between £1600 and £5000 that is crying out to be filled by a mid-price product. Now this could possibly be a version of the X with e.g. a zoom lens or a Tri-Elmar type lens, or possibly yet another re-badged camera from Sony, Fuji, or Panasonic to fill the gap until the Wetzlar factory is up and can cope with full production of their own designed camera and lenses. It may be no more than a design study model to come in 2013, but I for one will be crossing my fingers at the Monday bash and hoping!
